The Dracut Police Department announces that Stephen D. Chaput will serve as the Acting Chief of Police.
Chaput was named the Acting Chief on Tuesday, June 2, while Chief Peter Bartlett is temporarily out on injured reserve.
“I am honored to be serving the community in this role and supporting the great work done by the men and women of the Dracut Police Department during Chief Bartlett’s absence,” Chaput said. “I’ve been proud to serve the department for over three decades and remain committed to protecting the safety and interests of our residents.”
Chaput has worked at the Dracut Police Department for over 33 years, spending the majority of that time in a supervisory or command position. Chaput most recently served as the Deputy Chief of Police, a position he has held since 2017.
He started off in the department as a patrol officer in 1987 and later joined the Criminal Investigation Bureau as a detective and supervisor. He was then promoted to supervisory roles for the patrol division, including lieutenant in 2005, where he oversaw the day shift. He also served as the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s (N.E.M.L.E.C.), Special Weapons and Tactics Team Commander.
