The Dracut Police Department will conduct a Citizen Police Academy from 6:30 to 9:00 PM Wednesday evenings beginning October 12, 2016 and continuing through graduation on December 7, 2016. The Academy will be held at the Dracut Police Station and classes will run for 8 weeks.

The goal of the Citizen Academy is to offer attendees an insight into the Dracut Police Department as an organization and to give a better understanding of a Dracut Police Officer’s role in the community and the difficult challenges facing law enforcement today.

Participants will receive instruction from officers, supervisors and civilians with particular expertise in the subject matter. Course topics may include: patrol functions, domestic violence, restraining or harassment orders, motor vehicle law, Internet safety, identity theft, K9 program and firearm laws and safety. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about handguns from a firearms instructor. Students will also participate in a ride along to see what real-time patrol is like.

The Dracut Police Department Citizen Academy is offered free to all residents 18 or older. Participants must have no criminal history. A background check is conducted on all applicants prior to admission into the program. Participants must be able to attend all classes to receive a certificate of completion.

Applications may be downloaded from the Dracut Police Department website at www.dracutpolice.com or may be picked up in person from the records department.

All applications must be received on or before Friday October 7, 2016. Any questions regarding the program contact Lieutenant Michael Fleury at 978-957-2123, ext. 123 or mfleury@dracutpolice.com.
